about

Just as they had been in the "old country", many Finns became farmers. The love-smitten miner in this ballad has been laid-off at the mines and forced to work the land. Mesaba Park near Hibbing was founded as a Finnish socialist cooperative camp. It is one of a few across the U.S. still surviving.

lyrics

Soft Heart

(intro.)
They laid me off at the mine, and I moved out to Cherry
Year was 1933, I lived on fish and berries
Planted me a garden, spent the winter chopping wood
Ran into town to shop some and my life changed to the good!
Our eyes met at the Co-Op store, peeking through the Mason jars
You told me you pickled everything that you planted in your yard
It was love at first sight, I would learn to pickle too,
until Mister Roosevelt gave us other jobs to do

(chorus)
In these hard times, we all need a soft heart
We all got to take heart, in everything we do
Darling in these hard times, we all need a soft heart,
and I found my soft heart in you

It was during Suomi Festival, at Mesaba Lake,
after the culla mojakka, kaffia and cardamom cake,
that we polka'd around the maypole, I kissed her then proposed,
now we walk hand in hand, down the rough and rocky road

(chorus)

(bridge)
We haven't got a pot to piss in
But with you in my arms, there ain't much missin'

(chorus)
